Hey Father i love the secrets of lord of the rings just wondering if you were thinking about making some more episodes, maybe on rohan and how it started and gondor.

  2. Yes, I'm certainly thinking of making more episodes; I am putting together a team of volunteers that can help me with research on the various areas in Middle Earth. I think the next episode will go to Rivendell and talk about the elves.

Ohh that sounds so cool. Hey are you still playing LOTRO, I am a big fan of how they created Rivendell by the way. It is really cool, And thanks for the reply

  4. Yes, I'm still playing on the European servers, although I don't have much time lately. I have a level 50 Champion, and I'm now playing with a second character, a level 32 Elf Hunter. You are right, Rivendell looks wonderful, even better than in the movies. Do you play Lotro?

I started playing lotro after listening to The Secrets of the Lord of the Rings.

I'm in Canada, so I play on the US servers - my Hobbit Hunter is lv41.

I'm glad that the podcast is coming back; it's one of my favourites. I'm looking forward to hearing you explore some of the new areas that will be in the Mines of Moria expansion. It's supposed to have Hollin, lots of Moria, and Lothlorien! I'm probably going to have to level up some more before I can play there though.

  7. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Middle Earth - lots of regions left even in the game as it is now.

You definitely will want to level up until lv. 50 before you enter the Mines of Moria

Man is it tempting to volunteer for the LOTR Research Squad, but I'm afraid my wife would eviscerate me. We have trouble getting the bare basics done these days!

I've got a couple books on my current reading list, but as soon as I'm done with those, it will be about time for my annual re-read of LOTR. Actually, to be honest, I only do a full read-through every two years. The rest of the time, I'm just continually re-reading my favorite chapters. Right now, my absolute favorite is, oddly enough, The Council of Elrond. I know it seems to a lot of people to be a very 'mechanical' chapter -- as though Tolkien had to put it in there for exposition to bring the reader up to speed and flesh out the history and place the events of LOTR in context. I like the chapter because it strikes me as a kind of Middle Earth version of the UN Security Council -- at least, the way the UNSC is supposed to work. Everybody gets together to solve a problem (Sauron); they set aside their bias and grudges (Elf-Dwarf, for example), pool their resources (the Fellowship) and roll up their sleeves to solve the problem.

Anyway, I'd be happy to chime in with what I know occasionally, Father. Or, if you have any small research requests/topics/questions, just let me know!

I started playing LOTR online during the beta, when Fr. Rodderick mentioned it. I became hooked on it and by last September '07 I was a lvl 50 champion, but about a week after I reach 50 I was banned from the game by the Admin. They charged me with being a "Gold Miner" and selling it. Anyone who played the game at the time would know that you could not achieve that level by simply "mining". I tried for several weeks to convince them that it was untrue, but they offered me the chance to start over and I refused. I spent many weekends and nights building my champion and did not feel like starting over! To make things worse I prepaid for the lifetime play and they would not give me a refund or partial refund.

How often do you all play and what sever are you on?

I usually play a few times a week - one or two evenings and one or both days of the weekend - depending on how busy I am. Since Moria launched I've been working on a Warden (lv 32 as of this post). If you're ever on Gladden feel free to drop me a line. My character's name is Saradil.

I stopped playing a few months back but I think I'm going to resume playing very soon. My characters were all on the Brandywine server and I was wondering if any of you had heard of a kinship called Veritas Splendor. Supposedly, it's a Catholic kinship that has several priests playing in the group.

  13. I used to play but found it difficult to get in regularly playing group - especially with being in Austria and playing on the US servers. I played on the Brandywine server as well and was a member of Veritatis Splendor but I believe it is now defunct. I have a lifetime membership but haven't gotten the Moria addition.

I had trouble getting good groups and stopped playing awhile back as well. But I've been missing the game lately and I'm thinking about starting back again. I'm on the Brandywine server as well so if you start back up let me know.

At the moment I don't have time to play characters on two servers, but if I ever do I'll look you up on Brandywine.

Likewise, if you're ever on Gladden drop me a line. I'm in a pretty big kinship, so we usually have people to play with most hours of the day or night.

    Happy Questing!

    Father Seraphim,

What was your characters name? They have something called my lotro now where you can look up other players characters and see their armour, stats and what now.

For what it's worth, the text of LotR (at least, probably also The Hobbit, and perhaps The Silmarillion) was available quite recently online. It's probably not the best reading experience, but it would make searching easier.

Father Roderick has recently made the trip back to Middle Earth which hopefully means another episode of the Secrets of the Lord of the Rings.

    Father Roderick,

I just wanted to let you know I am listening through your LOTR podcast for the 2nd time and really do enjoy it. I wanted to pass some topics over to you to consider in a podcast.

    1. What ever happened to all the dragons in Middle Earth?
    2. Since Elves were the main race in Middle Earth, how did men come to being?

Also, in the podcast where you were exploring where the dwarves lived, your voice had a reverb to it that sounded as though you were actually on location! Was that a side effect of podcasting while in LOTR online or a setting you enabled? In any case, it sounded great!

Love the podcast and keep up the good work. God Bless!

  21. Hey Scott, dunno about the Dragons dying off (I just recall the tale of Smaug), but if you were to read the Silmarillion you'd see a lot of interesting stuff on how Middle Earth came to be and the reason for all the races. Quite interesting stuff.

Hello Father, I started listening to your podcasts about a year ago. I bought the Lord of the Rings online not long after that. I am an absolute nerd when it comes to lord of the rings, I know my stuff. I just want to say that you are doing a great job and I really hope you come out with more podcasts soon.

    FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
Bilbo had gotten a ring - the ring - from the creature Gollum or perhaps the Ring got him. Gandalf explains the Ring has a way of acting in its own interest. The Ring is willful and perverse; its allegiance is to its maker not its wearer.
Bilbo returned to the Shire and he adopted his kinsmen Frodo whose parents had accidentally drowned.
In the first chapter of Book I what strikes one as significant is the tone: it is not the child-talk or condescending jollity of THE HOBBIT, but it certainly is lighter in tone than later chapters; it is cheerful. Perhaps this tone has a purpose to ease us into the world of Middle-Earth by way of the unpretentious and domestic realm of the Shire, making us comfortable there before the adventure begins.
